SALINE DI LINGUA – SALINA

Lago naturale di Lingua

On the backdrop of the natural lake of Lingua, the remains of an ancient salt production plant are preserved, one of the most significant testimonies of the Roman age to the Aeolian Islands. Until the end of the eighteenth century, the salt marshes of Lingua appeared clearly but today the tanks, used for the evaporation of sea water, are no longer visible as they are entirely submerged by the lake water. Of these remains the lower part of the dividing walls, built with the technique of opus reticulatum, attribuibili alla prima età imperiale romana (I-II secolo d.C.), e il pavimento, costituito da un suolo di calce magra e ghiaia. Le vasche interessano il versante nord-occidentale del lago ed in particolare la sponda Ovest delimitata dalla strada, e si estendono fino al centro del lago dove si intravede un muro in opus reticulatum that crosses the lake in the S-N direction.
