NECROPOLI IN CONTRADA CARDUSA A TRIPI

Resti della necropoli

The necropolis of contrada Cardusa, in the municipality of Tripi, extends over a vast hilly area to the north of the ancient town of Cardusa. Abakainon and Pizzo Cisterna.
The burials reveal particular constructive efforts, showing markedly monumental characteristics, as they consist of a real funerary monument above (epitymbion). Made of local sandstone, the funerary monuments are of different types. The simplest type, consisting of a dado surmounted by a stele or column, is flanked by more complex ones, with a tombstone-holder dado placed on a stepped base formed by two or three parallelepiped lithic blocks placed one on top of the other, according to a type that is fairly common in Sicelian necropolises of the late Classical and Hellenistic periods.
